TL;DR – AI for concrete contractors is not about pouring slabs faster. It is about killing three specific paperwork bottlenecks that eat concrete guys alive: reviewing a bid before you sign, drafting a change order in the field, and closing a punch list without spending Sunday on the couch typing. This post walks the three prompts, sample inputs, and the guardrails Bryce uses himself on his Rigby jobs before offering the same to S4 Media clients.
AI for concrete contractors is not the shiny stuff. No robot trowels. What saves a Blackfoot concrete guy time is the three paperwork tasks that eat every trade: reviewing a bid, drafting a change order, closing a punch list. All three are language work. All three are where Claude, an AI assistant from Anthropic, is useful today.
Every prompt below is one Bryce runs at SwagerBuilds on his own flatwork before recommending it to S4 clients like Skinner Custom Concrete.
Why Blackfoot and Bingham County are different
Most articles about concrete contractors assume residential flatwork: driveways, patios, RV pads. Blackfoot is not that market. Bingham County is agricultural and industrial. Sugar-plant equipment pads, potato-storage slabs, cold-storage floors, and dairy pours are the work here.
That changes the paperwork. A Blackfoot concrete guy is responding to bid packets from GCs and facility engineers, not homeowners. The docs are longer, the change orders more technical, the punch lists come from owner’s reps. AI helps most where paperwork is the bottleneck, and in Bingham County it is.
Workflow 1: AI bid review before you sign
Scenario: a GC sends a 40-page bid packet with drawings, specs, and a scope narrative. You have to price it by Friday. It is Tuesday. You are on a slab pour.
Old play: read the packet in bed, miss half the scope, price it, sign it, discover on day 3 they wanted #5 rebar at 12 inches on center and you priced 16.
New play: upload the packet to Claude, run this prompt, get a summary and scope questions inside 10 minutes.
You are helping me review a concrete scope of work before I bid. I am a concrete contractor in Eastern Idaho. Read the attached bid documents and return:
1. SCOPE SUMMARY (10 to 15 bullets, plain English, what am I actually building)
2. MATERIAL CALLOUTS (concrete strength (PSI), rebar spec and spacing, mesh, form type, finish, any admixtures, sealer, joint spec)
3. FLAGGED AMBIGUITIES (any spec item that is unclear, contradicts another item, or would cost me if I got it wrong)
4. MISSING ITEMS I SHOULD ASK ABOUT (things a standard commercial or ag concrete scope of this type would include but the packet did not mention - vapor barrier, control joint layout, curing method, testing frequency, etc.)
5. RED FLAGS IN TERMS (retainage over 10%, no mobilization payment, "time is of the essence" language, unlimited liquidated damages, indemnity language)
Do not invent numbers. If a spec is not in the packet, say so. If two specs contradict, quote both and flag it.
Bryce ran a version of this on a bid for a farm-equipment shop foundation at SwagerBuilds last spring. Claude caught two things a human reviewer misses at 10pm: rebar on sheet S-2 did not match the schedule in the spec book, and the packet did not specify a vapor barrier under a slab-on-grade that would house heated equipment. Both were $2,000+ questions.
Do not trust it to price. Claude will guess at cubic yards and unit cost and be wrong for your zip code. The prompt tells it to summarize and flag, not price. Keep it that way.
On proprietary data. If the bid has confidential terms, use Claude for Work or the Anthropic API. Neither trains on your inputs by default.
Workflow 2: Change order from a voice note
Scenario: the GC’s super walks the pour and asks for an extra 4-foot pour extension at the loading dock. You are in rubber boots and a wet t-shirt. You will not remember the exact ask in three hours.
Old play: text “will send CO tonight.” Get home at 8, try to remember what he said, fumble it into an email, send it the next day, GC pushes back on scope. Now you are negotiating a CO you never wrote clearly.
New play: pull your phone out before you leave the site. Record a 60-second voice memo. Open Claude (or run it inside Cowork, Anthropic’s desktop assistant, if you want file access on your laptop). Drop the transcript in with this prompt:

Rules: do not invent scope items I did not describe. If the transcript is ambiguous on quantity, use "approx" and flag for follow-up. End with a bullet list of QUESTIONS I still need to answer before submitting.
Bryce turned a 45-second voice memo about a footing depth change into a signed CO the same evening this spring. Time from voice memo to sent CO: 8 minutes.
Workflow 3: Punch list from photos and notes
Scenario: end of the job. Owner’s rep walks the slab and hands you a scribbled list on the back of a receipt. 14 items. You have to turn it into a formal punch list, schedule the work, and communicate a completion date.
The prompt:

Do not invent items. If an item is vague ("clean up in Bay 4"), keep it vague and put it under CLARIFICATION NEEDED.
Upload phone photos of the punch list scrap plus your voice-memo narrative. Claude drafts the 14-item punch list in a format the GC will accept. Bryce uses this on his own residential slabs; the workflow scales to a 200-item commercial punch.
Where Skinner Custom Concrete fits (and does not)

Guardrails, every time
Bid data is proprietary. Use Claude for Work or the API. Do not paste confidential terms into the free chatbot.
Prices are yours. Never let the AI pick a number. The prompts force placeholders for a reason.
30-second read on every output. Every time. Skip it and the workflow is broken.
Do not trust the AI on engineering. If the review flags an ambiguity in a structural spec, call the engineer. Do not paste Claude’s guess into a bid.
The math for a Blackfoot concrete guy

What about ChatGPT or Gemini? Same idea. We use Claude because we like the writing quality and the business-tier privacy defaults. Any capable model runs the workflows above. The prompt matters more than the model.
Can I connect Claude to Procore, BuildOps, or another concrete-industry CRM? Sometimes. MCP (Model Context Protocol) connections exist for some platforms and not others as of writing. If your CRM has an open API, an engineer can wire one up. For most solo and 5-person shops, copy-paste is fine.
How do I keep GC bid packets private? Use Claude for Work or the Anthropic API. Neither trains on your data by default. Do not upload confidential bids to the free chatbot without checking the terms.
Does this replace my estimator? No. It replaces the reading, summarizing, and formatting task. The estimator still prices, still walks the site, still makes the calls.
