Contractor Website Speed: Why Yours Is Slow and What It Costs You

Contractor website speed is the least exciting thing on your marketing list and one of the few that quietly costs you jobs every single week. Not because Google punishes you into oblivion — it does not — but because a homeowner standing in a driveway with one bar of service will not wait eight seconds to see your phone number. They will hit back and call the next guy.

We have rebuilt trade shop websites across Eastern Idaho — Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Ammon, Blackfoot — and slow sites are the single most common thing we inherit. Here is the plain-English version of what makes a contractor website slow, how to check yours for free in about five minutes, and which fixes are worth paying for.

TL;DR — Most slow contractor sites are slow for one reason: giant unoptimized job photos straight off a phone. Fix that and you fix most of it. Test free with Google PageSpeed Insights, aim for the page to be usable in under 2.5 seconds on a phone, and work the list in this order: compress images, cut the plugins and tracking scripts you are not using, pick a real host, then worry about code. Speed will not make a bad site rank. It will stop a good site from leaking the traffic it already earns.

Why contractor website speed matters more than it does for other businesses

Your customer is almost never sitting at a desk. They are on a phone, often outdoors, often on rural Eastern Idaho cell service that is fine for texting and rough on a 12-megabyte homepage. The gap between how your site feels on the shop wifi and how it feels to a homeowner in Ucon is enormous, and you never see the bad version.

There is also the search side. Google confirms that page experience — including loading speed — is a real ranking consideration, though it is explicit that useful content wins over a faster page with worse content. Google lays this out plainly in its page experience documentation. The honest read: speed is a tiebreaker, not a magic bullet. When you and three competitors all have decent pages, it helps. It will not rescue a site with no service pages.

The bigger cost is the one nobody measures — people who left before your site loaded never show up in your lead count. They are invisible. That is what makes this problem easy to ignore for years.

How to test your contractor website speed in five minutes

Do not buy a tool. Use Google PageSpeed Insights, which is free and run by Google itself. Paste your homepage URL, and — this is the part people skip — read the Mobile tab, not Desktop. Desktop always looks better and nobody hires you from a desktop.

Run it on three pages, not one: your homepage, your busiest service page, and your contact page. They are usually built differently and they usually score differently.

The three numbers worth understanding, all defined publicly by Google in its Core Web Vitals documentation:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how long until the main thing on screen shows up. Google’s “good” threshold is 2.5 seconds or less. This is the one that is usually blown out on contractor sites, and it is almost always a hero photo.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how fast the page responds when somebody taps something. Good is 200 milliseconds or less. Usually broken by too many scripts.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — whether the page jumps around while loading. Good is 0.1 or less. This is the one that makes somebody tap the wrong button and leave annoyed.

Write down your three mobile numbers before you change anything. Otherwise you will never know whether the money you spend did anything.

The number one cause: your job photos

Here is the thing almost every trade shop gets wrong, and it is completely understandable. You take great job photos on your phone. Your phone shoots enormous files. You upload them straight to the site because why would you not. Now your homepage is asking a homeowner’s phone to download the equivalent of a small video before it shows them anything.

A modern phone photo can easily be 4 to 8 megabytes. The same photo, properly sized and compressed for the web, will look identical on screen at a fraction of that. This one issue accounts for the majority of slow contractor sites we have opened up.

The fix, in order:

  1. Resize before upload. Almost no spot on a website needs an image wider than about 2,000 pixels. Most need far less.
  2. Compress. Use a free tool or a compression plugin. You are looking to get most job photos comfortably under a few hundred kilobytes.
  3. Use a modern format. WebP does the same job as JPEG at a much smaller size and is supported everywhere that matters now.
  4. Lazy-load anything below the fold. Your gallery on page four should not load until somebody scrolls to it. Most platforms do this automatically now — confirm yours does.

If you do nothing else on this page, do this. It is usually the difference between a failing mobile score and a passing one, and it costs nothing but an afternoon.

The second cause: plugins and scripts you forgot about

Every chat widget, popup builder, review carousel, analytics tag, heatmap tool, and abandoned page builder you have ever installed is still loading, on every page, for every visitor — including the ones you stopped using two years ago.

Open your plugin list and be ruthless. If you cannot point at what a plugin does for you today, deactivate it and see if anything breaks. The usual offenders on trade sites: a slider plugin loading on pages with no slider, two separate SEO plugins fighting each other, a social feed widget pulling from an account that has not posted since 2023, and three different tracking scripts because three different marketers set them up.

Same for fonts. Every custom font family and weight is another download. Two weights of one font is plenty for a contractor site.

The third cause: cheap hosting

The four-dollar-a-month shared hosting plan is the most expensive money you will ever save. On budget shared hosting your site sits on a machine with hundreds of other sites, and when one of them gets busy, yours gets slow. There is nothing you can fix in your own site that gets around it.

You do not need enterprise hosting. You need managed hosting from somebody who takes WordPress seriously, and for a small trade shop that is generally a modest monthly cost — meaningfully more than the bargain plan and dramatically less than what one lost job costs you. If your host cannot tell you what caching they run, that is your answer.

A CDN helps too, though less than people think for a local contractor. Your customers are all within an hour of you. The bigger win is a host that is simply not oversold.

What contractor website speed will not fix

Being straight with you, because plenty of people will happily sell you a speed package: a fast website with no service pages, no town pages, and no reviews will still not rank. Speed is a multiplier on content that already exists. If you are choosing between spending money on page speed and spending it on building real service and town pages, build the pages first. Then come back and make them fast.

Also: a perfect 100 score is not the goal and chasing it wastes money. Passing the mobile Core Web Vitals thresholds and having the page feel instant to a real person is the goal. The difference between a 78 and a 94 is usually invisible to a homeowner and expensive to buy.

A realistic order of operations

If you are starting from a slow site, here is what we would actually do, in order:

Week one — run PageSpeed Insights on three pages, mobile tab, and write the numbers down. Then fix the images. Resize, compress, convert to WebP. Re-test. This alone usually moves the score more than everything else combined.

Week two — audit plugins and scripts. Deactivate anything you cannot justify. Cut font weights. Re-test.

Week three — install and configure a caching plugin properly, or confirm your host handles caching for you. Do not run two caching systems at once; they fight.

After that — if you are still failing mobile thresholds, that is when hosting or the theme itself is the problem, and that is a real conversation about rebuilding rather than patching.

In our experience with Eastern Idaho trade shops, most sites go from failing to passing on images and plugin cleanup alone. The rebuild conversation is real but it is rarer than the people selling rebuilds would like you to believe.
